Natural catastrophes have maps, scores and models. Political risk usually has a spreadsheet someone updated last year. Insurance → Analytics now has a Country risk tab that scores every country where you have sites, and shows why.
The 21RISK country risk score
Every country gets a score from 0 to 100 for four kinds of risk to property and business:
- Political violence: riots, strikes, civil commotion, terrorism and sabotage.
- War: war, civil war, insurrection and armed conflict.
- Expropriation: confiscation, nationalisation and other government action against property.
- Biological hazards: epidemics and other biological hazards.
The score is the highest of the four. It comes from public data only: travel advice from the U.S., UK and German governments, CDC travel health notices, World Bank governance indicators, UCDP conflict data and GDELT news-coded unrest. An AI model applies a fixed rubric to those facts, and every country is scored five times so a single unusual answer does not move it. Facts are checked every hour, and a country is scored again when they change.
See where risk meets your values
- Four figures at the top: your riskiest country, how much is insured in high-risk countries, which countries are flaring this week and whose scores changed.
- A map of the countries you have sites in, from green to red, with your sites on it. Hover a country for its score and the part that sets it.
- The events behind the scores: switch on Conflict for deaths in armed conflict over the last year, or Unrest for protests, riots, strikes and attacks reported in the news over the last four weeks, and see how close they come to your sites.
- Insured value by country risk: how much of your portfolio sits in low, moderate, high and very high risk countries.
- A pulse of the last 13 weeks: a row per country with a dot per day, grey while unrest in the news is usual for the country and red when it rises well above, flaring countries first. Open a country for its whole year as a calendar.
- A countries table with the score and its four parts next to your sites and insured value, ready to export to Excel.
Every score explains itself
Pick a country and you see each part's reasons in plain words, with the facts they rest on. Below that is each government's advice in force, summarised in our words with a link to the original, the score's history, and your sites in the country. You can always show your broker why a country scores what it does.
Ask your AI assistant
The scores are open to the AI assistant you connect to 21RISK, such as Claude or Microsoft Copilot. Ask it "How much of our insured value is in high-risk countries?" or "Why does Colombia score so high, and which of our sites are there?", and it answers from the same data as the tab, within the access you grant it. See Connect AI assistants to 21RISK.
Key benefits
- See political exposure in one place: the countries and values that need attention, without assembling travel advice by hand.
- Explain it to your broker: every score comes with its reasons and the public sources behind them.
- Notice when things change: the score history shows when a country moved and why.
You find it under Insurance → Analytics → Country risk. The score is an indication from public sources, not insurance, security or travel advice. Read more in Country risk.
