Hot Work Permit

One of the most dangerous jobs performed at factories etc. In the realm of occupational safety, specific tasks demand heightened precautions due to the inherent risks involved. One such category of tasks is 'hot works.' Understanding what constitutes hot works is fundamental for risk assessment and precautionary measures.

1 Information
*

Before initiating hot work, ensure precautions are in place as required by NFPA 51B and ANSI Z49.1. Make sure an appropriate fire extinguisher is readily available. This Hot Work Permit is required for any operation involving open flame or producing heat and/or sparks. This work includes but is not limited to, welding, brazing, cutting, grinding, soldering, thawing pipe, torch-applied roofing, or chemical welding.

NFPA Fact Sheet

A hot work permit is an essential component of a hot work program, which helps to ensure that hot work activities are conducted safely and in compliance with relevant regulations and standards. The following are the typical steps involved in obtaining a hot work permit:

  1. Identify the hot work activity: The first step is to identify the specific hot work activity to be performed, such as welding, cutting, grinding, or brazing.

  2. Assess the hazards: The next step is to assess the hazards associated with the hot work activity. This includes identifying potential sources of ignition, flammable or combustible materials, and other hazards that could cause a fire or explosion.

  3. Implement controls: Based on the hazard assessment, appropriate controls should be implemented to minimise the risks associated with the hot work activity. This may include the use of fire blankets, fire extinguishers, or other fire suppression equipment, as well as measures to isolate the hot work area from other work areas.

  4. Obtain authorisation: The person responsible for the hot work activity should obtain authorisation from the designated authority or permit issuer, who will review the hazard assessment and ensure that the necessary controls are in place.

  5. Fill out this permit: Once authorised, this model will act as a hot work permit,

  6. Conduct the hot work activity: The hot work activity can proceed once the permit has been completed and all necessary controls have been implemented. During the hot work activity, workers should follow the procedures outlined in the hot work permit, and the designated supervisor or authority should monitor the work to ensure that it is being conducted safely.

  7. Close out the permit: Once the hot work activity is complete, all parties shall sign the permit and the princibal will publish the permit after completion to ensure the documentation is in place.
